Hi David,
I like that users can reply to announcements. Thinking about it, this is more intuitive than creating a separate topic somewhere else to handle replies.

You must be referring to what we do on phpbb.com. I guess the reason for that is because we encourage users to subscribe to that forum and user replies would trigger unneeded notifications. Obviously don't need that here

Even with the drawback of "unneeded" notifications, I still think this is a better system than the one on the phpbb website. I might be biased though as I never use the subscribe feature. Anyway, thank you for your time.

Just curious, are there any core changes left on this site or has everything been ported to an extension?
